What is in the Stronghold 4 demo
Firefly's support page describes the current demo as a tutorial mission, a Free Build map with invasions and an early look at Skirmish with some familiar faces. It was one of the most played demos of Steam Next Fest in October 2026. Here is what each version added:
- First public demo (June 23, 2026): Two missions: an economic mission, Rebuilding the Town, where you help Sir Longarm rebuild Bruckdale, and a military mission, The Mountain Fortress, where you hold a castle through a series of sieges.
- Free Build demo (October 8, 2026): Free Build on the largest map so far, a late-game unit called the Captain, moats for defence, and wool and weaving production chains.
- Skirmish update (Steam Next Fest) (October 19, 2026): Skirmish mode: a deathmatch against three CPU opponents, Penryn, The Snake and Sir Longarm.
Free Build: the largest map so far
Free Build lets you build a castle piece by piece without a mission goal, on the largest map Firefly has shown, and then test it against invasions. It is the best place to try the new things: dig a moat in front of your walls, set up the wool and weaving production chains, recruit the Captain (a powerful late-game unit that is new in Stronghold 4), and watch the weather. Firefly says snow hinders crop growth and heavy rain reduces archery range, so a winter can cost you food and a storm can blunt your bowmen.
Planning your first castle? The Stronghold 4 buildings page has the wood cost of each farm and workshop and the food chains from farm to table, and the Stronghold 4 units page prices your army in gold, honor and weapons.
Skirmish: Penryn, The Snake and Sir Longarm
The Skirmish update is a deathmatch against three CPU opponents. Penryn is the shepherd who becomes the hero of the new campaign; The Snake and Sir Longarm are characters series fans know from earlier games. The full game launches with eight CPU lords, so five more will appear on December 7.
