How Stronghold 4 plays

Stronghold 4 Gameplay: Modes, Economy and Sieges

Stronghold 4 is a castle sim: you build a castle and the village economy behind it, keep your peasants fed and loyal, and defend your walls or storm a rival's in real-time sieges. Here is how a game plays, from the first farm to the first siege, with real costs from the free demo.

The Stronghold 4 gameplay loop

  1. Build an economy. Farms and workshops cost wood and need a worker each: in the demo an Apple Farm costs 10 wood, a Bakery 50. Raw goods go to the stockpile, and workshops turn them into food and ale. The Stronghold 4 buildings page has every food chain and a cost calculator.
  2. Keep your peasants happy. Your popularity shows how your peasants feel about you. The popularity panel lists food, ale, religion, tax and fear factor as separate lines, and Firefly names honour, taxes and food as the way to keep the peace.
  3. Raise an army. Troops come from the barracks. Each soldier costs gold and one peasant, and most also need honor and a weapon: an Archer costs 12 gold, 2 honor, 1 bow, 1 peasant. The Stronghold 4 units page prices a whole army.
  4. Fortify and fight. Walls, towers, moats and traps hold off attackers; catapults and tunnelers break into enemy castles. Weather changes the fight: snow slows crop growth and heavy rain cuts archery range.
